Dynamical Systems, Emergence and Explanation

چکیده
1. A NATURAL AFFINITY? The application of concepts from dynamical systems theory to issues in cognitive science is a growing and, I think, laudable project. Such usage has been extended from the neurophysiological level (e.g. Skarda and Freeman, 1987, Globus, 1992) through the intermediate “subsymbolic” level of Smolensky’s connectionism (see also Horgan and Tienson, 1996), right up to the “personal” level of belief/desire psychology (e.g. Townsend and Busemeyer, 1995). Whilst not entirely uncontroversial, such applications have often yielded interesting insights, both empirical and theoretical.

Multistable Chaotic Dynamical Systems and Philosophy
It is proposed that any dynamical system with coexisting chaotic attractors has an emergent property. This provides a nonreductive explanation of mental states and their high sensitivity to noise and initial conditions. If metaphysical terms result from the mental states and these are emergent properties of dynamical systems with coexisting attractors, such as the brain, it is suggested that th...
متن کاملDynamical Explanation for the Emergence of Power Lawin a Stock Market
Power laws are found in a wide range of diierent systems: from sand piles to word occurrence frequencies and to the size distribution of cities. The natural emergence of these power laws in so many diierent systems, which has been called self organized criticality, seems rather mysterious and awaits a rigorous explanation. In this letter we study the stationary regime of a previously introduced...
متن کاملDraft for Principia: comments welcome Downward Causation and the Autonomy of Weak Emergence
Weak emergence has been offered as an explication of the ubiquitous notion of emergence used in complexity science (Bedau 1997). After outlining the problem of emergence and comparing weak emergence with the two other main objectivist approaches to emergence, this paper explains a version of weak emergence and illustrates it with cellular automata. Then it explains the sort of downward causatio...
متن کاملEmergence and self-organization in partially ordered sets
Reported here is the discovery of a simple functional the optimization of which by a dynamical process results in extraordinary structural organization in partially ordered sets. Since partially ordered sets are one of the most prevalent and fundamental objects in Mathematics, and are ubiquitous in nature, physics, engineering and technology in general, and since any system amenable to mathemat...
متن کاملEvolution and the Explanation of Meaning*
Signaling games provide basic insights into some fundamental questions concerning the explanation of meaning. They can be analyzed in terms of rational choice theory and in terms of evolutionary game theory. It is argued that an evolutionary approach provides better explanations for the emergence of simple communication systems. To substantiate these arguments, I will look at models similar to ...
